It's no secret the Caribbean is an excellent place for exploring. Now you too can be an explorer, cruising down the paved roads of historic New Providence Island.
You'll have a great choice of what to see and do when your Carnival cruise calls on the port of Nassau. But if you'd like to hop into an off-road vehicle and go exploring in a caravan of like-minded guests, this Nassau shore excursion was made for you.
After a short walk to the staging area and following a safety briefing (drive on the left side of the road), your adventure begins when you take your seat in your Jeep. There are four guests per off-road vehicle and you may decide among yourselves if you want to share the driving or one person does it all. You'll be given a walkie-talkie so you may listen to your guide point out interesting sights and landmarks as you drive out of Nassau and into the countryside of New Providence Island. You'll learn that the island was a stronghold for pirates until 1718 when Great Britain declared The Islands Of The Bahamas a crown colony and named former privateer Woodes Rogers as its first Royal Governor. Rogers flushed out the pirates from Nassau, restored law and order and built Fort Nassau.
Note the old world colonial architecture that came from the influence of the British Loyalists who fled America during the Revolutionary War in the 1770s. A good example is the House of Parliament. Nassau continued to grow and prosper during the American Civil War and Prohibition because the island was ideally situated for shipping blockaded goods to the United States.
The forts of Nassau are of particular interest with Fort Charlotte, located on West Bay Street, being the largest. You see Fort Charlotte as you drive past. During your journey, you'll also see the former residences of the island's famous and infamous and other historical landmarks.
So book the Historical Highlights of Nassau by Jeep now for lots of fun driving through the countryside discovering all that New Providence Island in the Bahamas has to offer. It's an exciting way to add fun ashore to your fun afloat.
